Eric Lawton Jr., 83 passed away Saturday afternoon peacefully at the Job Haines Home in Bloomfield, NJ. Eric was a lifelong native to Hoboken participating in the community in many capacities.
He attended AJ Demarest High School before getting his Bachelor’s at Michigan State University and then attended American Academy McAllister for Funeral Service. Eric played two summers of baseball in the minors where he was invited by the New York Yankees. He served his country in the US Army for 2 years touring in Oikinowa and returned home to work in the family funeral business up unto the present day. Eric was well known at Hoboken’s Little League where he coached the Kiwanis Team many years ago to a 1962 City Championship. He also was active member in the Hoboken Kiwanis Club as past president. Eric led the St. Mary’s Hospital Board of Trustees in building its North Wing in the early 70’s and also recently building the Hospitals new Emergency Room construction. He served the St Peter and Paul Parish council in the 70s heading there finance committee to help with Bingo and fundraising during difficult times. He co-chaired the AJ Demarest High School class of 1951 reunion committee to many successful gatherings. Eric never missed a handball game at the YMCA where he was a handball men’s club member for over 40 years. He loved his sailing days at the Lavallette Yacht Club where he enjoyed many a sunset since 1974. He loved feasting on those many famous Monday Nights at the Hoboken Elks lodge # 74 where he has enjoyed his membership for many years. He served on countless committees & local boards and was very happy just being a good neighbor to all and a true Gentleman. His greatest love was serving all of the countless families in their times of need here in Hoboken where he performed many years of dedicated funeral service in the community. He will be sorely missed by all and especially his loving Family. Eric was the son of the late Eric and Marie Lawton, loving father of John E. Lawton and his wife Michele, and Elaine Walko. Cherished Pop Pop of Emily and Johnny Lawton, and Darien Walko; Devoted brother of Lucielle Casatelli and her Husband Hugo, and the late Carole Lawton and his late brother in law Peter J. Turso. He is survived by many loving Nieces and Nephews, cousins and relatives. Visitation for Eric will be on Wednesday and Thursday from 4:00 to 8:00 PM both days at the Lawton-Turso Funeral Home corner of 7th and Washington Sts. Hoboken NJ Funeral mass will take place on Friday 11:00 AM at St. Francis Church 3rd and Jefferson Sts. Hoboken, with interment following at Holy Cross Cemetery N. Arlington NJ.
