Thomas J. Liddy MD, 85, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 13 at his home in Livingston surrounded by his loved ones after a long illness. Born in Morristown, Tom was raised in Summit, graduating from Summit High School. He then received his B.S. from Rutgers University, Newark. In 1959, he received his medical degree from Thomas Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, where he received numerous awards and was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, National Honor Society. Dr. Liddy continued his medical education as an intern at University of PA Hospital, Philadelphia, and a residency and fellowship in Pathology at National Institute of Health in Bethesda, MD. In 1965, he returned to Livingston with his family where he resided for 53 years. Dr. Liddy accepted a position as Pathologist and was the first Director of the Hyperbaric Unit at St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston. Dr. Liddy became Director of Pathology and Laboratories at St. Mary Hospital, Hoboken in 1972. In 1989, he became the Director of LabCorp, NJ in Cranford, retiring in 1998.  He was a member of the American Medical Association (AMA), New Jersey Medical Society (NJMS), The College of American Pathology (CAP), and the Hudson County Medical Society, belonging to the Peer Review Committee. Tom’s true passion, when away from medicine, was fly fishing. An avid collector. “Doc” spent as much time possible chasing trout among the many rivers and streams of NY and PA. Every account was methodically documented in his journals. He was a proud member of Northern NJ Trout Unlimited, Catskill Fly-fishing and the Theodore Gordon Fly-Fishers, NY Branch.  When the trout were not running, Tom was an avid Civil War buff. His library was full with books, magazines and memorabilia. He enjoyed his time spent with the Civil War Roundtable Society in Morristown and discussing battles in specific detail. He spent many vacations with trips to battle sites. Tom is survived by his beloved wife, Sarah O’Grady-Liddy, his loving daughter Diana Liddy, grandchildren, Matthew Mulligan, Casey and Jack Liddy. Also, siblings, Patricia Traynor (Richard), Martin Liddy (Antonette) and Margaret Liddy, and his daughter-in-law, Maureen Liddy. He was predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Katherine Liddy, his wife, Gloria Jean Liddy, son Richard Liddy, and brother William Liddy. “Thomas J” will also be missed by many relatives and friends, along with his loving caregivers who became family to us during his last years.


Viewing for Dr. Liddy will be Saturday, from 2-6pm, at Lawton-Turso Funeral Home, corner of 7th and Washington St. Hoboken, and on Sunday, from 2-6pm, Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home, 145 E. Mt. Pleasant Ave., Livingston. There will be a funeral Mass Tuesday at 10:00 AM at St. Philomena’s Catholic Church in Livingston with his entombment immediately following at the Gate of Heaven Chapel Mausoleum, E. Hanover, NJ.
