Alan S. Dubner, 63, of Jersey City, NJ, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, September 14, 2021 after a long, valiant battle with cancer. Born August 5, 1958, Alan remained a native Brooklynite at heart from Luna Park in Coney Island, NY wherever his life’s adventures led.
Alan was a gregarious, fun-loving guy who loved his family and friends alike. He was a generous spirit, a kind and loving man, always at the ready to help a friend, stranger, or whoever was in need. Growing up on Coney Island, he so loved the ocean, and he and his wife, Peggy, were avid cruisers where they enjoyed themselves every year, travelling the Caribbean. He loved to spend time at the family’s home in the Poconos where he would sit on the porch or by the fire, enjoying the serenity. He worked so hard on the house and made a beautiful home for his family where they enjoyed weekends and vacations the last 15 years. Alan was also a terrific cook and did most of the (good) cooking for his family. He was the best baked-ziti maker ever known to man.
Alan loved his children profoundly, and was so proud of the men and women they had become, the families they made and the beautiful lives they created for themselves. He enjoyed having his family around him and always treasured the time spent in their Pocono house where friends and family gathered to eat, drink (lots of sangria) and be merry. Alan’s spirit will live on in his children always.
Alan worked for the NYC Housing Authority from the time he was 19 until 2001 when he joined the private sector working for a family-owned business, London Management, where he learned so much and made life-long friends. Since 2006, he worked for Equity Residential where he was highly regarded and well appreciated for his strong work ethic, mentorship and team building. He was truly a company man and worked as though the business was his own.
Alan was pre-deceased by his parents, Martin (Chickie) and Shirley Dubner (nee Perlumtter) and his step-daughter, Nicole Gaine.
Alan is survived by his wife, Peggy, and their children Michael Dubner and his wife, Patti; Matthew Dubner and his wife, Sarah; Heather Overholt and her husband, Nicholas; Melanie Brotzman and her husband, Keith, his grandchildren, Caleb Dubner, Addison Dubner, and Colten Dubner, and Melanie and Keith’s baby due in April, whom he was so pleased to have learned about before he left us, and his sister Rebecca Paul and her husband, Philip, his brother Gary Dubner and his wife, Susan.
He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, nieces, cousins and friends who love and miss him dearly, and by his dog, Cooper, who stood by his side every night, watching over him.
Alan was loved deeply and will be missed by all who knew him. May he rest in God’s peace until we meet again.
