Calvin H. Furino, 89, of Hoboken, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on April 2, 2023.
Beloved husband of Claire (nee Turek). Loving father of Calvin and his wife Xiomara, Russell and his significant other Isabel, and Richie. Cal was predeceased by his caring daughter-in-law Paulette. Adored Grandfather of Jennifer and her husband Steven, Larry and his wife Jessica, Katie and her husband Stephen, Michael and his wife Tinamarie, Giaco and his wife Blair, Emma, Russell Jr., and Lizzie. Dear great grandfather of Matthew, Annabel, Chelsea, and Kyle. Devoted brother of Tony and wife Carmela, and the late Emma, Josie, Maggie, and Freddy. He is also survived by many relatives and friends.
Cal was born in 1933 in Hoboken, NJ. After graduating from Dickinson High School, Cal served in the Army during the Korean war. He was a member of the social club from Here to Eternity. Cal married the love of his life, Claire in 1955, and started his own hot dog business in which he became known as the “Hot Dog King” of Hoboken, later having a street named after him. In 1973, Cal and Claire opened the restaurant “Cal’s and Sons,” which became a staple in Hoboken. With hard work from his family, the business flourished. He enjoyed his AC trips, wine, bocce, family, his Italian heritage, and most of all- the love of his life, Claire.
His integrity and hard work made him a true patriarch and a man to be respected. To quote Frank Sinatra, Cal would tell you “I did it my way.” Our family will truly miss his love and generosity.
